Match reports 13/01/18

Warrington Hockey Club had a fantastic weekend with three wins and a draw across it's teams. The women's first team moved three points clear of the Division 1 relegation zone with a hard fought 3-0 win over Alderley Edge thirds. Nat Lyons and Holly McCurrie fended off Edge's first half pressure before Kate Connolly put Warrington ahead with a bullet strike from a short corner. Emma McCue lobbed the keeper from top D after a solo run to score the second and Sally Fraser sealed the game when Meg Sutch's good work set her up. The men's first team came away with their heads held high after a 1-1 draw with promotion-chasers Keswick. Midfielders Nick Bottomley and Scott McCue ran tirelessly throughout a battling team performance from the ten men. After going 1-0 late in the second half a resurgent Warrington pulled level with a swept shot at the back post from Andrew Gould.

The women's seconds fought hard for a 2-1 win at home to Whitchurch firsts. The first half was tense with both sides creating chances. Warrington started the second half strongly and Player of the Match Vicky Stout broke the deadlock by converting a penalty flick. A second goal soon followed when Molly Rudd neatly deflected a Steph Rawlins strike. Whitchurch were awarded a penalty flick which Tish Edwards saved to protect the lead. Warrington's midfield of Becky Miller, Lauren Hayes and Abi Hynes worked hard to ensure Whitchurch only managed to pull one goal back. The men's seconds also came out on top against a Whitchurch side who had held them to a draw earlier in the season. Gavin Brown broke the deadlock with his first of a brace before Player of the Match Richard Bloomfield made a fantastic double save to keep Warrington ahead . Noal Phillpotts dominated the midfield with a sublime display of passing to unsettle the Whitchurch defence and put Warrington further ahead after shimmying past the defence. Left back Rich Taylor's finish from a tight angle secured the points.
