Match reports 16/02/19

Warrington men's first team staged a stunning comeback to secure a draw at Formby after being 3-0 down with just ten minutes to go. Warrington's passing was excellent throughout the game but they conceded three unlucky goals and were frustrated repeatedly at the other end by saves from the keeper and two clearances from defenders on the line. Rob Powell, AJ Edwards and Doug Samuels created some great opportunities before a stunning strike from Jordan Callum finally made the breakthrough. A resurgent Warrington scored again through a Richard Cook short corner and another fine finish from Callum completed the turnaround.

The women's first were victorious against a tenacious Rhyl, winning 2-0 at home. In the first half Rhyl came out the blocks and pushed hard, breaking through a couple of times forcing solid defending from Dawn Harrington, Kirsty Anderson, Carrie Wright and Holly McCurrie and superb goalkeeping from Tracy Jackson who saved a point blank lifted strike. In the second half Warrington's midfield made good attacking play, fighting tirelessly to ensure ball possession and making great passes. Warrington’s determination to break down Rhyl’s resilient defence was rewarded with a reverse stick hit from Steph Rawlins. The second goal came from a brilliant run from Captain Carrie Wright who dribbled the ball from defence, evading several attacks before reaching beyond the halfway line passing the ball to Steph Rawlins who slotted away to make her second goal and sealing victory. Man of the Match went to Sally Froggatt who fought hard and made some key plays.

In a game where Warrington men's seconds were on top for 80% of the game it wasn't their day to hold their nerve and make it a hat-trick of wins, lacking composure in the opposition last third and conceding two goals with only 1 in reply against Deeside ramblers 7s. Chris Ashworth and Gavin Brown slotted into the defence for the first time this season and both put in strong performances. The highlight for Warrington was an assist on debut by Player of the Match Bertie Houghton skilfully beating an opposition player to get down to the by-line and putting a good ball in for a composed finish by Andrew Gould.

The women's seconds lost 5-0 to Chester away.
